Free Thanksgiving Word Search for Kids

The United States is getting ready for another major holiday in the time of COVID-19 — Thanksgiving.

Our family doesn’t have anything spectacular planned. We have opted to stay home for Thanksgiving; much to the chagrin of some of our extended family. As Mr. Boots is working in and out of various hospitals, we just don’t want to risk sending the grandparents to the hospital, or worse.

Honestly, I encourage everyone to lay low at home this year because of the stories I’ve read from doctors and nurses lately. They’re burned out, they’re stressed out. We can all do them a huge solid by finding alternative ways to be together but apart this Thanksgiving.

Mr Boots and I will probably Face Time and Skype our families at some point to say hello. I’ve heard of some families who will do something similar during Thanksgiving dinner. A few of my friends are trying to plan activities to do with their friends and families that can be completed in their own homes. I thought my latest printable would be a great fit for that: a Thanksgiving Word Search.

It’s also a great activity for socially distancing families and friends to complete. Just send everyone the link to this page and ask them to print out their own copies. Complete it together while you’re Zooming, or Face Timing, or Google Meeting!

What are your Thanksgiving 2020 plans?

Free Thanksgiving I Spy Printable

This Thanksgiving I Spy printable is geared towards older kids and adults since I wrote out the words of the object you need to find. But it can definitely be done together with younger kids. I created it in black-and-white so that you can color the objects yourself for a little extra fun. A Thanksgiving I Spy game is a great way to keep your guests occupied while you’re waiting for that turkey to bake!

I made this freebie with G and L in mind. They have really gotten into I Spy type books lately (Where’s Waldo is a big one with G at the moment). I thought it would be fun to try and create an I Spy printable for them to work on during the downtime we have while waiting for Thanksgiving Dinner to be made or that in-between time we usually have waiting for dinner to settle and dessert to be served.

Microblog Mondays: Getting Ready

I’m simultaneously getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas today.

This morning the boys helped me clean up the fire place so I could put up a few Christmas decorations.

A few of G’s Thanksgiving crafts also adorn the mantle 🙂 Also? If anyone has any tips for getting rid of that gawd-awful efflorescence, please let me know. I swear we’ve done everything our chimney sweep suggested and it’s just gotten worse.

I haven’t taken our Christmas boxes down; I stood up on a ladder and grabbed what I could out of boxes which are in the loft in the garage. This is just the start of what our mantle looks like for Christmas, but already the lights have cheered me up little a bit. I also strung some up around the entrance way between the living room and play room. Those lights have 16 different settings and the boys are having a good time trying to decide which twinkling sequence they like best.

G really wanted to put the tree up, and I’m extremely tempted. However, I don’t know where to put it this year. We’ve gained a few more pieces of furniture in the places we’ve put it in the past. But it will go up this weekend. I need more little lights around the house.

Once I got the boys settled in their rooms for nap time, I dug out the place settings Mr Boots and I received for our wedding. We got married six years ago and have never used any of it. I didn’t even have anything to put our china on display until this summer. Most everything is out of the garage, but still in its original packaging. It’s still so shiny and new. Part of me feels hesitant to use it because it won’t ever look so shiny again. But mostly, I’m excited. I’ve been waiting six years for a house and an excuse to use it. Thanksgiving is perfect.

It seems more friends than usual are getting ready for Christmas before Thanksgiving this year. Driving around the neighborhood, we’ve also noticed more lights and candy canes on display than usual for this time of the month. There’s been so much doom and gloom in the world this month it makes me wonder if this spike is our way of trying to cheer ourselves up a little bit.

Handprint Turkeys: A Thanksgiving Kiddie Craft

After we voted earlier this month, I felt the need to do something crafty. I’d been taking stock of our craft supplies and came across a handful of feathers that had mostly been used for L’s speech therapy. With Thanksgiving approaching, I thought it would be fun to make paper handprint turkeys. The boys had a lot of fun doing it, so I’m sharing it with you today.

Supplies

Trace your child’s hand and cut along the line. It doesn’t have to be exact.

Fold pipe cleaner in half and tape to the back of the hand. This will be the turkey’s legs. You could bend the ends to make feet if you wanted.

Turn the paper over. Apply glue to the fingers and halfway down the palm.

Stick on the feathers.

Glue or stick a googly eye on the thumb.

I decided to cut out snoods for our turkeys. We used a bit of glue to apply them below the eye.

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays that are kind of a big deal, but I do little to no decorating. I guess I feel like I’m slow to clean up Halloween (I *just* put our outside decorations away) and then BAM is Christmas. Or maybe it’s the fact we’re seeing Santa and hearing jingle bells on November 1st. What’s the point in decorating when we’re already onto a totally different holiday? And this year is just weird. There’s been so much doom and gloom and bad news that I’ve been ready for twinkling lights and candy canes since November 10.

Anyway…

Yesterday I was digging through G’s artwork and found a few more turkey crafts he had made the last two years at school. I decided I’m going to stick all of our craft turkeys on the kitchen cabinets to make things appear more Thanksgiving-ish for the lunch we’re hosting for my family on Thursday.
