Halloween…Christmas…Valentine’s Day…Easter… What were once carefree holidays spark dread in me now that I’m a Food Allergy Mom of a child who cannot eat peanuts.

I can’t walk into a store and grab just any bag of candy; I have to read labels. I familiarize myself with what is being sold in stores weeks ahead of time so I know which treats are safe and which treats could be dangerous when they come home from Trick-or-Treating or a class party.

At holiday parties, I have to watch my youngest like a hawk. That bowl of festive M&Ms sitting out in the open is great for most guests, but my peanut-allergic kid doesn’t see the danger in them. And, unfortunately, neither do most people hanging out with us.

When we first learned about L’s peanut allergy, it seemed as though all candy was off limits. It turns out, most chocolate is. Once I accepted that I began learning that there are nut-free candy options out there. And there are some allergy-friendly companies that make special treats seasonally throughout the year.

So, today I’m sharing a list of peanut free candy ideas. My hope is that it will help other nut-free families and those with kids in nut-free schools and classrooms. These are products that I would let L eat without needing to refer to labels, which aren’t exactly handy when the kids are coming home with candy from a variety pack 🙂
