Virginia’s Tax Free Weekend is coming up and it’s a great time to buy supplies and clothes for school, but did you know those aren’t the only things you can save on?
I always thought Tax Free Weekend was for parents going back to school shopping. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I bought a bra, not knowing it was a tax free weekend, that I realized anyone can really utilize it to save a little money.
Here in Virginia, there are three categories: School Supplies, Clothing, and Footwear; Appliances (Energy Star and WaterSense); and Hurricane Preparedness. I took a look at Virginia’s list and was surprised to see some of the items that qualified:
- Diapers (I have no idea if this is disposables only or if it applies to cloth as well – if you know tell us about it in the comments!)
- Baby clothes
- Wedding Dresses (and veils!)
- Bottled Water
- Duct Tape
- Musical Instruments
Here I’ve been thinking this weekend meant pencils, paper, and sneakers and I could have saved on diapers? Don’t let babies hold you back folks! Actually, don’t let any child hold you back.
Not every state participates in Tax Free Weekend (sadly) and those that do might do it differently, so definitely check out what your state allows. Some states also extend this to online shopping, which is great because I’ve heard people can go nuts-o in the school supply aisles. This will be my first year legit back-to-school shopping and I’m about as antsy over it as I am about Black Friday shopping. Do I do it all online? Do I brave the store? I know I’ll be comparing prices and getting my coupons ready.
Do you shop during Tax Free Weekend? What’s on your list?
